Whitby

We caught the local bus to Whitby, just a few miles north.
This pretty seaside town claims Captain Cook as he started his seafaring career here.
With sunny weather the crowds were out in force and the cafes and bars were humming. A few families sat on the beach (12°)
We walked along their harbour wall which showed us how rough the sea must be in bad weather.
The ruins of a large Abbey dominate the hill above the harbour. The Abbey was destroyed by Henry XIII during the " dissolution of the monasteries" , his crusade against Catholicism and search for cash to pay for war against the French.
Tomorrow we will catch bus and train to York.
Bye for now
