Day 6 Shap to Orton
13kms (116.6kms) 225m gained
We have broken a stage into two and given ourselves and easy day today.
Not much happened on the walk today. Three hours walking across fells. Dryish weather meant it wasn't too boggy. The wind was strong and always in our face but the rain held off.
The dry stone walls are everywhere and very well maintained. There are many different ways to cross them and many different ways to latch farm gates.
We stayed in the pub which was the only accommodation in town. The room was tiny and felt like it was on a tilt. It was warm and comfortable! The owner had bought it to save it from closure in February and was eagerly seeking staff to help him run it. The night we were there it was humming with farmers in for a drink before dinner and a barmaid, originally from Carlisle was learning to " pull a beer" on her first day. At breakfast we were looked after by a retired man who had moved to Orton from the Falklands to be near his children.
